Apart from our parents, the most lovable bond that we share is with our siblings. The siblings bond is very special- it is not like other bonds. Though we keep fighting with them very often, they are the ones with us in our happy and sad moments. A sister-brother bond is just magical. They have each other’s back through thick and thin and are sworn to secrecy when it comes to their secrets.

There is a reason behind each day we live and every celebration we come across. Each day or a celebration signifies something and has some meaning in our lives. Hindu festivals are known for the history that stands behind them, and RAKSHA BANDHAN is one such festival that adds a great purpose to relationships in our country. It signifies the role of a brother/a sister play in an individual’s life and also implies an immortal bond between them.

There is a saying - A brother/sister is the first best friend. Yes, it holds true, and Raksha Bandhan is a day which allows celebrating the beautiful love between a brother and a sister.

Raksha Bandha also signifies the social responsibility of a person as it underlines the notion that everybody should live in harmonious co-existence with each other.

How is Raksha Bandhan Celebrated?

On this auspicious day, a sister ties Rakhi-a sacred thread of protection embellished with love and affection to her brother/s. This thread of rakhi is considered to be stronger than iron chains as it is the bond of love and trust. Love- as the brother and sister promise to love each other till the end and Trust- as they promise each other to stay by their side, no matter the odds. Some people even say that rakhi is not just confined only to a sister and a brother. A wife can tie rakhi to her husband, or by a disciple to the guru. The bond not just have to be between blood relations, a girl can consider anyone as her brother throughout the life and tie rakhi. The ritual strengthens the bond of love and transcends the boundaries of the family. Once the Rakhi is tied around the wrist, the sister performs puja for the happiness, joy, safety, and prosperity of her brother. The pooja thali includes chawal, sweets, and Diya. It is a superb opportunity for family members to come together and celebrate. People who can’t come together (for various reasons) send Rakhis for showing their feelings and love.

Mythological Beliefs.

Like other festivals, Raksha Bandhan also has many myths/beliefs related to it.

Indra and Sachi Devi: As per Bhavishya Purana, Indra (the King of Devas) was advised by Deva Guru Brihaspati to wear a Rakhi as a protection against enemies (Demons) when he was facing defeat at the hands of Vritra Asura. As advised, Sachi Devi, who was the consort of Indra tied a Rakhi to Indra.

Nariyal Poornima- As per a mythological allusion, Rakhi was intended to worship the sea-god Varuna. Hence, offerings of coconut and rakhi to Varuna, ceremonial bathing are performed on this festival. Usually, on this festival, fishermen offer coconut and rakhi to the Varuna; thus, this festival got its name Nariyal Poornima.

The festival of Raksha Bandhan is also mentioned in Mahabharata. Draupadi (wife of Pandavas) tied rakhi to Lord Krishna prior to the battle with Kauravas.

Historical Beliefs

After being defeated at the hands of the great Hindu King Purushottam of Punjab, Alexander’s wife tied a Rakhi to Purushottam asking him to protect her husband from being slain,

It is believed that during Emperor Humayun’s rule, Rani Karnavati (Queen of Chittor) had sent a Rakhi to emperor Humayun to get protection from Bahadur Shah who was invading her kingdom. In spite of being of a different religion, he rushed to her help.
